How to Write a CIOS Listing That Gets Booked Every Time
Getting listed on CIOS is free and takes five minutes. Getting booked consistently takes a little more thought, but not much more. Here's what separates listings that earn from ones that sit idle.
The Photo Is Everything
This isn't an exaggeration. A blurry photo of something sitting on a garage floor gets scrolled past. A clean, well lit photo of gear that looks cared for gets booked.
Move the item to your best lit spot, ideally near a window, before photographing it. Use a clean background, a white wall, your driveway, anything uncluttered. Take a few angles, front, side, and any accessories included. And clean the item first. You're selling trust as much as the item itself.
Write a Title People Would Actually Search
People search the way they talk. "Milwaukee M18 Drill" gets found. "Power tool" doesn't.
Be specific. "Karcher K5 Pressure Washer" beats "Pressure washer for hire." Include the brand, the model, and any key accessories, and add Perth if you've got room. It helps with local search.
Price It Sensibly
Underpricing makes an item look cheap or suspicious. Overpricing means no bookings at all.
A good approach is to check what similar gear costs at local hire depots and price yourself 20 to 40 percent below that. It's clearly better value for the renter and still genuinely worthwhile for you.
Answer Questions Before They're Asked
Think about what someone would want to know before booking. What's included? What condition is it in? Any accessories? Anything they should know before using it?
Here's an example for a drill kit: "Milwaukee M18 brushless drill driver in excellent condition. Includes two 5.0Ah batteries, rapid charger, 50 piece bit set and carry case. Used regularly and always maintained. Ideal for renovations, furniture assembly or trade use. Pickup from [suburb], street parking available."
Set a Sensible Deposit
A deposit signals that the item is real and looked after. Set it at roughly 20 to 30 percent of the item's replacement value as a starting point. Too low and it can look like the item isn't worth much. Too high and you'll put off genuine renters.
Keep Your Calendar Current
A calendar that hasn't been touched in months is the fastest way to lose a booking. Block dates you need the item, unblock the rest. Takes a few seconds.
Respond Quickly
CIOS sends you an email and an in-app notification when someone requests a booking. The faster you respond, whether you're approving or suggesting a different pickup time, the more confident the renter feels. Aim for a few hours, not a few days.
Follow Up After Every Booking
Once a hire wraps up, send a short message. Something like "Hope the [item] worked well, let me know if you need it again." A good experience is what turns a one off renter into someone who comes back next time, and word of mouth matters a lot while the platform is still growing.
Apply these to your listing at cios.net.au and you'll notice the difference.
